A7: Rising
With climate change coastal cities have begun to struggle to combat the rising oceans. One issue all face is the management of stormwater, San Francisco is no exception.
The Future of San Francisco
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
What is at Risk?
One at risk community is Mission Creek. Formerly a river, the canal has been transformed into a residential sector facing the Bay and is home to numerous apartment complexes as well as house boats. All of which are right on the water’s edge.
One possible solution the community has developed involve drastic measures such as glass barriers along the banks or tidal locks beyond the China Basin. In the present such actions seem preposterous though in the not too distant future they may be the only path if nothing is done today.
Stormwater
Stormwater runoff systems are reliant on sea level to function, when oceans swell during hurricanes and typhoons flooding happens because the runoff system can’t release the excess water into the ocean. In 100 years the oceans will have risen enough to submerge multiple communities within San Francisco to speak nothing of Oakland and other communities that share San Francisco Bay.
